1. Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple

Synonymous with Madurai is the Meenakshi Sundareswarar twin Temple, the pivot around which the city has evolved. The Meenakshi Temple complex is literally a city - one of the largest of its kind in India and undoubtedly one of the oldest too. The temple grew with the contribution of each dynasty and victorious monarchs, into an enormous complex extending over an area of 65000 Sq m. The temple first came in to being 2000 years ago and was substantially expanded during the regime of Thirumalai Nayak(1623-55 AD).

Lord Siva in his incarnation as Sundareswarar and his fish-eyed spouse, Meenakshi, are enshrined in this twin temple. There are four massive gateways enclosing these two shrines. Even a casual visitor is fascinated by the many paintings and sculptures.

2. Thirupparankundram Temple

Thirupparankundram temple one among the 14-saivaite temple of Pandya Kingdom is the foremost among the six abodes of Lord Muruga. This temple also known as "Then kayilayayam" (Southern kailash) was worshipped by Chera, Chola and Pandya rulers. The presiding deity Sri Subramaniyaswamy is seen in rockcut temple, which is unique to this temple.

Abishekam is performed only to the presiding deity Sri Subramaniya swamy. Unlike other temples, where Nandhi is seen in front of Lord Shiva, here Lord Perumal is seen..it is located 8 Kms South of Madurai Railway Junction. The temple here is one of the six abodes of Lord Subramanya. Its innermost shrine is cut out of a solid rock.

3. Alagar koil

About 21 Kms North East of Madurai, stands a celebrated Vishnu Temple dedicated to Lord Alagar. The temple is situated on a hill amidst panoramic surroundings. The shrine is know as Alagarkoil and the hill , Solaimalai. The temple also contain some beautiful carvings and makes the visit rewarding. Palamudirsolai, one of the six abodes of Lord Subramaniya is located atop the Hill.

One of the six abodes of Lord Subramanya, Palamudhirsolai is situated above Azhagar Koil in the hills about 4 kms away. At the top of the hill is situated the natural spring Nuburagangai where the pilgrims take bath.

4. Gandhi Museum

 

Timings: 1000hrs to 1300 hrs and 1400 hrs to 1730 hrs. (Open all days)

Housed in the old Palace of Rani Mangammal, the Gandhi Museum depicts the highlights of the freedom struggle and contains a picture gallery of the Gandhian movement. Also can be seen are a gallery of relics, Khadi and village industries section and South Indian Handicrafts section.

5. Mariamman Teppakulam

 

Mariamman Teppakulam is a beautiful square tank spread over a huge area of almost 16 acres, located about 5Kms East of Meenakshi Temple. The tank is the scene of the colourful float festival held in January/February to celebrate the birth anniversary of King Thirumalai Nayak, who built this tank. The deities of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar are placed in a float, called “Teppam”, decorated with flowers and illuminated with hundred of lights. This float is taken around the tank to the sound of traditional music. On the Northern side of the tank a temple is dedicated to Mariamman , a famous village deity of Tamil Nadu.

6. Thirumalai Nayak Mahal

 

The Thirumalai Nayak's palace is open to the public from 9.00a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and 2.00p.m. to 5.00 p.m. The most imposing remnant is a huge Audience hall opening into a countryard with elaborately ornamented arches. A sound and light show depicting the story of Thirumalai Nayak and Silappathikaram (a Tamil Epic) can be seen here daily.

7. St. Mary’s Cathedral Church

St. Mary’s Cathedral in Madurai is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madurai. It is one of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in India and is situated 2 km South East of Madurai Railway station and 200 meters from the Thirumalai Nayak Mahal.

8. Madurai Malligai

Madurai is surrounded by several mountains. It is famous for Jasmine Flowers. Jasmine flowers are transported to other cities of India from Madurai. Madurai is well known for its fragrant Jasmine flowers. Jasmine is known as Malli or Malligai in Tamil.

Madurai Malli is an important horticultural produce. The buds are transported every day to major cities in India, like Chennai, Mumbai and Bangalore.

9. Alanganallur Jallikattu

The world famous Jallikattu (similar to bull fight) is conducted here during the Pongal festival season, which occurs during the middle of January (usually 14th). Many people from in and around India come here during this festival to visit the Jallikattu. There is a Sugar factory located within 4km from Alanganallur. Agriculture is carried out in vast areas around this place. Rice, sugar cane, coconut and plantains are the major crops. Climate is moderate with no extremes. This place is well irrigated by periyar sub canal. People of different religions live here.

10. Courtallam

Courtallam is a panchayat town situated at a mean elevation of 160m on the Western Ghats in Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu, India.The numerous waterfalls and cascades along with the ubiquitous health resorts in the area have earned it the title the Spa of South .The main attraction of Courtallam for all its visitors are waterfalls. There are three major waterfalls that are reachable by road - the Main Falls, Five Falls, and Old Courtallam Falls. Other waterfalls like Shenbaga Devi Falls and Honey Falls are reachable only by trekking on the mountain. Near the Old Courtallam Falls is a smaller falls called the Tiger Falls, called by that name as it was known to have been frequented by tigers looking for water. There is another small falls inside the Government Horticulture Park above Five Falls, but it is off limits to the public. Other attractions include the boat houses near Five Falls and Old Courtallam Falls, snake park, a public aquarium, small children's parks and play areas.

11. Kanyakumari

The name of this place has been christened after the virgin goddess – Kanyakumari Amman. Mythological stories depict that Goddess parvati under the disguise of Devi Kanniya did a penance in one of the rocks in this area to reach the hand of Lord Shiva. This place is also a popular pilgrimage. The tourists who visit this southern most tip of India would certainly enjoy the exuberant scenes of the sunsets, the sunrises especially on full moon days. The nature of the sand in the beaches of Kanyakumari is unique as it is multicolored. The epitome of attractions are Gandhi Mandapam,Vivekananda Memorial, Suchindram Temple, Padmanabhapuram Palace.

12. Suruli

Suruli falls also known as Chinna Suruli, Cloud Land Falls or Meghamalai Falls, is located 56 km (35 mi) from Theni and 10 km (6 mi) from Cumbum in the Theni District in Tamil Nadu, India. Nearest habitation is Kombaithozhu Village. It is a 2 stage Cascading water fall. The Suruli River supplying the falls originates from the Meghamalai mountain range. The falls drop from a height of 150 feet gathers into a pool, flows for a short distance and again plummets an additional 40 feet.The special feature of the fall is that it is a round the year fall. However, the best season to visit is June - October, when the thickness of the water column is astounding. The beauty of this fall finds mention in Tamil Epic, Silappathikaram written by poet Ilango.Tourists visiting Thekkadi, the Vaigai dam and Kumbakarai falls did not fail to visit the Suruli falls near Cumbum.Kailasanathar Temple Cave is located near Suruli Falls. There are 18 caves in and around the Suruli falls. The Kailasanathar Cave Temple is situated 800 metres above the fall and lhas a spring, which possesses water of curative powers.

13.Rameswaram

Rameswaram is as ancient as Ramayana. This place was noted in Ramayana. Devotees hailed Rameswaram as the Varanasi of the south. This island people Trust Sea for their living. It is treated as a holy place, devotees bathe in the sea and bathing gate is popular there. Rameswaram is known for its long corridors and towers and 36 theerthams. Veranda is 197metres long south to north. The temple is facing the east. The sea is just 100metres away from the entrance of the temple. Sea is very calm, that water is considered scared.

There are many famous Temple located near Rameswaram. Kondandarama temple is located on the way between Dhanushkoti and the ramanatha temple. Ramanatha temple is the places which attract the devotees.
